When to plant pumpkin seeds in New Zealand?

Pumpkin seeds are generally best sown in New Zealand during spring when soil temperatures consistently reach around 20°C or higher. Warmer regions may begin sowing pumpkin seeds in September, while cooler areas may need to wait until November. Sowing or transplanting iinto nutrient-rich soil ensures strong initial growth. Providing ample sunlight and regular watering encourages healthy plants. Kings Seeds offers premium pumpkin seeds designed to suit a range of New Zealand’s growing conditions.

How long does it take for pumpkin seeds to grow?

Pumpkin seeds generally germinate within 5–10 days under ideal conditions, including warm, moist soil. From planting to harvest, most varieties take between 100–120 days to fully mature. Factors such as soil quality, sunlight and spacing can influence development time. Kings Seeds provides high-quality pumpkin seeds, carefully selected for reliable growth in New Zealand gardens, helping gardeners enjoy successful harvests.

How to germinate pumpkin seeds?

To germinate pumpkin seeds, generally sow them 100cm apart within rows and 200cm between rows,  in moist, well-draining soil. Maintaining a soil temperature between 20–30°C encourages quicker germination or you can sow indoors or on a heat pad for greater reliability of soil temperature, and then plant out the seedlings. Keep the soil or mix consistently moist without overwatering to avoid rot. Placing seeds or seedlings in a sunny, sheltered spot aids strong early growth.
