Tomato seeds can be sown indoors in New Zealand during late winter or early spring and planted out after the last frost in your location to ensure successful growth. Generally, the optimal time for sowing indoors is from August to October, and planting outdoors during October and November when the soil has warmed sufficiently. Seedlings will take around 6-8 weeks to be of a size for planting in the garden, so count back the weeks from your last frost and this is when you should sow your seed. The maturation rate of tomatoes will differ between varieties. However, tomato seeds generally take 5 to 10 days to germinate, depending on the soil, warmth and moisture levels. Once planted, it may take around 80 to 90 days for the fruit to develop and ripen, depending on the tomato variety and growing conditions.
