Capsicum seeds are best sown in New Zealand during spring, from September to November, to take full advantage of the warmer soil. Generally, capsicum seeds should be sown indoors in seed trays, and then transplanted into the garden after the last frost in your location. Capsicums thrive in well-drained soil, with good sunlight and regular moisture. By sowing at the right time, gardeners can ensure a successful capsicum harvest.
The number of capsicums that grow from each plant will differ due to factors such as the variety, water and nutrient availability and conditions at flowering for pollination. However, capsicum plants generally produce between 5 to 10 capsicums. Larger varieties, such as California Wonder, may yield fewer but larger fruits, while smaller types like the Lunchbox Mix can produce a higher quantity. With planting in the right location and consistent care, gardeners can enjoy a bountiful harvest from each capsicum plant.
The maturation rate of capsicums will differ between varieties. However, capsicum seeds generally take 7 to 14 days to germinate, depending on the soil, warmth and moisture levels. Once germinated, the seedlings take 40 to 60 days to grow to a size where they can be planted in the garden. Once planted it may take around 80 to 90 days for the fruit to develop and ripen, depending on the capsicum variety and growing conditions. Factors like regular watering, sufficient sunshine hours and nutrient availability play an essential role in the speed of growth and maturation of your capsicums. All capsicum fruit will begin green in colour and then mature to its final colour i.e. red, yellow, orange. Fruit can be harvested at the green stage or left to change colour and will sweeten as it does.
Kings Seeds offers a broad selection of capsicum seeds, with vibrant varieties for every garden. Popular types include the classic California Wonder, snacking Lunchbox Mix, sweet conical Cornos Red and the popular Bell Colour Mix. Certified organic capsicum seeds are also available, providing gardeners with eco-friendly options to meet their preferences. Each variety delivers crunchy flesh, sweet flavour and unique colours. Whether you're looking for a sweet, mini type to snack on or a larger blocky type to make relish, Kings Seeds has the perfect capsicum seeds to suit every preference.
