Are basil seeds easy to grow?

Basil seeds are relatively easy to grow and are suitable for both beginner and experienced gardeners. They require well-drained soil, ample sunlight and consistent watering to thrive. Starting basil seeds indoors before transplanting outdoors can help extend the growing season and protect young plants from harsh weather conditions.

When to plant basil seeds in NZ?

Basil seeds thrive in warm soil temperatures, making early summer (November to December) ideal for sowing in New Zealand. Ensure the soil temperature is consistently above 20°C to promote germination. Planting indoors or in a greenhouse can extend the growing season, providing fresh basil year-round.

How long does it take to grow basil from seed?

Under optimal conditions, basil seeds typically germinate within 5 to 10 days. The seedlings will develop into mature plants ready for harvest within 60 to 70 days from sowing. Regular watering, adequate sunlight and nutrient-rich soil contribute to healthy basil growth and flavourful leaves.
