When to sow chilli seeds in NZ?

Chilli seeds can be sown indoors in New Zealand during late winter or early spring and planted out after the last frost in your location to ensure successful growth. Generally, the optimal time for sowing indoors is from August to October, and planting outdoors during October and November when the soil has warmed sufficiently. Seedlings will take around 6-8 weeks to be of a size for planting in the garden, so count back the weeks from your last frost and this is when you should sow your seed. Ensure chilli seedlings are planted into well-drained soil in a sunny spot to ensure fruit will ripen fully. By sowing your seed at the right time for your location you’ll soon have chillies ready to spice up your kitchen.

How to germinate chilli seeds?

To germinate chilli seeds successfully, sow them into trays in warm, moist soil with good drainage. Chillies are heat-loving plants and the ideal temperature for germination is around 20-30°C, so using a heat pad to help achieve consistent warmth can be beneficial for germination. Once germinated, seedlings will take 6-8 weeks to grow to a size large enough for planting into your garden. Be sure to harden off seedlings before planting outdoors by gradually acclimatising them to outdoor conditions several hours a day building up. For specific growing instructions, refer to the online product information for each variety.

Do chilli plants need full sun?

Chilli plants need full sun to thrive. These sun-loving plants require at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal growth. Chillies grown in well-lit areas produce more vibrant and flavourful fruit, making sunlight essential for healthy plants. When you grow chilli seeds from Kings Seeds, ensure they are placed in a sunny spot to maximise the yield and spice level.
